For as long as the Nile River has been the Nile River, Egypt has had its identity tied to it. It is the Nile and its miraculous bounty that ensured that Ancient Egypt could have an agricultural surplus to support dense urban settlements and ultimately its civilization. Without the Nile and how it courses through Lower Egypt, creating that fertile Nile Delta, you do not get the 3,000+ years of 33 Egyptian dynasties.
For the vast majority of human history, Egypt has been far more powerful, denser, and richer than nearly everywhere else on the path of the Sudan River. This is changing though as an Assertive Ethiopia, now more populated than Egypt, races to fulfill its long historical mission of being the master of its broader domain, and once again an influential power in its right.
Under one of Africa’s most gifted modern leaders, Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia went ahead with a modern megaproject known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). This dam and its technical specifics(6,500 MW power generation, 13 turbines, completely funded for billions from the Ethiopian population) was completed in 2020 and promises to change Northeastern Africa forever, potentially plunging it into a regional war.
